The Smashwords digital version is compatible with all popular readers and it's simple to sync files purchased there to your Kindle or iPad.
For Kindle, purchase the .mobi version, then connect your Kindle to your computer with its included USB key and drag/drop the downloaded file onto your device's /documents folder
For the iPad, purchase the .epub version, then open iTunes and drag/drop the file onto the Books section of iTunes. Next time you sync your device it will be available on your iBooks bookshelf.
Some readers are compatible with other formats, so check your device's documentation if you're unsure of what types your reader supports.
