As you may already know, November is the "National Novel Writing Month," also known as NaNoWriMo. This event has been going on since 1999, inspiring writers of all shapes and sizes to hunker down and accomplish the formidable task of writing a fifty-thousand word novel in only 30 days. I participated in it for the first time last year, writing a piece of short fiction just over the 50k word limit that I personally felt was crap — but the lessons I learned from the experience were what eventually prompted me to begin working on Iyetra in the first place: indeed, I've kept a similar theme and daily-word goal for the production of Books 01 and 02.
Although initially I didn't intend to join up again this year, as November happened to coincide with my schedule for beginning work on Book 03, as I reflected I decided there was really no reason why I couldn't do both. As such, the writing I accomplish for Book 03 will count towards the 50k word goal for NaNoWriMo 2010.
If you've ever been interested in writing something, this is a great project to start with. The point of NaNoWriMo isn't to write a masterpiece, but to just get started writing at all. Pushing yourself at a relentless pace diminishes the desire to stop and edit and rewrite over and over on the spot, letting your creativity be directed instead towards the objective of finishing something in the first place. There's still time to get started, as the event begins on November 1st in your local time zone and ends on the 30th.
If you're participating yourself and want to be writing buddies, or just want to keep track of my word count as I update my page, my personal profile is located here. Good luck if you decide to participate and see you past the finish line!
